On the 12th Thing of Christmas...

Comments are essential to create a community of communication. Students desire feedback from the assignments, especially in writing. Comments on blogs are a way for bloggers to create dialogue and feedback for one another. It creates depth in a blog when more than one blogger is "talking" about a topic. It allows those who just want to view encouraged to just drop a line or actually engage in a deep conversation (or lack thereof).
The sites are basically give you etiquette advise for commenting back to the original blogger. They are trying to avoid too much conflict within the blog. Road Rage=Blog Rage!
Ten Commandments were a great resource for proper manners.
Also, contribute to the blog to keep the academic babble going!

I just read an interesting article where they described some comments as "cheerleading" and suggested they should be banned because they stop the conversation and certainly don't add any new information. But I think that sometimes you just want someone to say, "I hear you, keep going."

I agree! If you are blogging with someone (or everyone) that is a bit on a the negative side, you tend to comment back with a little sass.Cheerleading, I think, encourages the blogger to keep blogging or start new ones.

I am glad I read your blog about thing#12 because I am not a blog fan, but your comment that suggested a way to get feedback from your students on an assignment was helpful.
